The public middle school where I teach is in a very poor urban area of North Carolina. On paper, my students are low-performing and at-risk. In reality, my students are fun, caring, resilient and survivors. Because of the poverty my children have faced, they have not had the experiences and opportunities given to a lot of other children. They have endured more than most adults could handle, and for many, school is the only safe and nurturing place in their lives. Their lack of exposure to things such as playing outside, trips to the beach or the lake, camping trips, trips to the zoo, etc., means that my students have very little prior knowledge from outside of the classroom. My kids work hard, yet on the tests that measure their academic achievement, they rarely demonstrate proficiency. By the eighth grade, when they become my students, many have given up on school because they have repeatedly been told they are not adequate. I want to give them the chance to prove to themselves that they are.
