Coosa Elementary School has invited the Baillie Players, a professional theater group, to assist its students in putting on a musical this fall. The musical is Snow White. The Baillie Players offer a unique opportunity by providing all scripts, CDs, costumes, and sets for the performance, as well as professional guidance and mentorship along the way. The cost of this program is $1800. Every student in the school will be involved in the performance—Pre-K, kindergarten, and 1st grade students will be asked to create posters advertising the performance; 2nd grade students will learn the music and be asked to sing along from the audience, and all 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students will be performing on the stage alongside a professional adult actor who travels with the Baillie Players. The younger students will also have an opportunity to practice their audience etiquette, which is part of their music curriculum. We presented this idea to students and teachers at the beginning of the school year to gauge interest, and I received immediate support as well as lots of squeals of delight. After discussing it with different classes, a student expressed to me that it had always been her dream to perform in a musical, but her parents had never had the time nor the money to help her become involved in one outside of school. She, like many of her classmates in similar situations, is especially excited about this opportunity. We hope to find enough funding to enable us to follow through on this incredible opportunity for the entire school. Coosa, unfortunately, does not have a theater program, yet we teach many students who are interested in acting. Many of these students’ families cannot afford to enroll them in theater classes outside of school.
