When students enter my classroom, I like to excite them with bright colors and lots of choices. My goal is to give them different opportunities to get comfortable and experience reading in ways they may not have done in school before. Giving students a variety of seating options in the classroom helps them to feel more comfortable and more empowered while they learn. Providing them with different ways to sit or lay around the room encourages them to take ownership in the classroom. Some students like to spread out on pillows while others prefer to sit in a beanbag to buddy read. I feel that by giving them varied choices, everyone will feel that our classroom is a home away from home. Comfortable reading spots help the kids to lose themselves in a book. They get so involved in the story they are reading that they are more likely to read independently when they finish their classwork.
