The equipment in this project is the core set of materials needed to start a new FIRST LEGO League Jr team at our school. Students will use this with the yearly game challenge set to build their project. Being part of a a FIRST team is a great way to apply Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) skills in a real world setting. Elementary and high school students will work together. High school students will mentor the younger kids. My students understand the importance of getting younger kids excited about STEM and building their school community. We should have a team of four to six 1st-3rd graders with a few high schoolers mentoring weekly. Depending on how it goes, we might be able to reuse the equipment for a new group of students second semester. We hope that supporting this team will build demand for more teams to form in our school. Our goal is to introduce as many students to FIRST as possible.
