The International Literacy Association advocates for children's rights to read in classrooms and communities. The goal is for all to have access to literacy. Equity and access to literacy are vitally important for all of our children. "The ability to READ, WRITE, and COMMUNICATE connects people and empowers them to achieve things they never thought possible." In order to become a better teacher of literacy, I need professional development that will enable me to reach my diverse learners in ways I have never dreamed of. The diversity of our children requires that I learn how to not only teach the individual students but also teach them about diversity. I must build a community of students that are literate in reading, writing, communicating and are able to celebrate diversity.
