Leveled readers are at the heart of my reading program. They are great stories at a wide variety of levels...so that a group of beginning readers have few words on a page and strong picture support. Then the higher levels of stories increase ever so slowly in difficulty to provide opportunities for increased learning. These (Rigby) readers are my absolute favorite books for teaching reading groups! They are very engaging! My students learn to track print, to figure out unknown words, to use "voice" (read with expression), to read increasingly complex text fluently. I also would like to add that these books are all 16 pages long...which is just the right amount of "work" at the reading table. These books are also sent home with students to read aloud to parents as homework. This gives students that much more practice...and helps parents to see their progress.
