The first thing my students do each day when they come to class is read for 20 minutes. Studies have shown that students who read six extra minutes a day can go from a struggling reader to one who meets their goals (bookriot.com). What's really important to me is that my students see themselves in the books that they are reading. That's why, if you notice, a lot of my books feature minority characters. Additionally, I have chosen to ask for several book series. I believe that if a student falls in love with the first book in a series, it encourages them to read the rest and as long as students are reading, I am happy.
