The power of a good book seems to become more commonly underestimated as we progress through out technological world. I have so many students who are never exposed to books at home, nevertheless, ones with substantial meaning. Their home lives are limited in the way of literature and our students struggle to learn comprehension skills. This past year was my first year teaching and I saw firsthand the difference a great classroom library makes. I was fortunate enough to have several books donated to me throughout the year and I was able to start building my classroom library. What I noticed was the kids felt less pressured within the classroom when it came to picking books to read. They weren't necessarily reading to hit AR goals. They were reading for enjoyment! What I noticed was that the kids were picking the same books out of the library over and over again. The books they were choosing all had very strong themes within them. My goal for this project is to add more enjoyable books into my library that will get the kids reading in their free time! I have watched my students all raise their reading levels this year substantially just from providing them with literature they actually want to read and are eager to understand. I know that if I can keep providing them with an opportunity to feed their own need for knowledge, they will take the initiative to do so!
