Reading has been a huge struggle in my classroom. A majority of my students are reading at an elementary level in high school, and through no fault of their own. At best, they are reluctant to read, especially anything longer than a short story or news article. Most of my students have never been exposed to something that made them excited to read. That is why I was shocked when they were all asking me about "The Hate U Give" towards the end of this year. "Do you have it? Can you get it? Can I borrow it? Can we read it as a class?" I have never had a student ask me for something to read. I was only able to read the first three chapters with them this year and they had to sit and listen because I only had one copy. Next year I would like to read "The Hate U Give" with them at the beginning of the year. I really think this would make such a difference in combatting that overwhelming reluctance my students have to reading. If they could realize at the beginning of the year that reading can be rewarding and fun, that would be a game changer. Support this project and help my students learn to love reading.
