These works feature the voices of those in America who often have no voice and thus little to no support, choice, and/or justice in their lives. My school's student population--- approximately 1/3 African American, 1/3 Hispanic, and 1/3 Native American--- rarely read literature which reflects their life experience. In a curriculum which rarely allows for choice, these books will empower students to exercise the freedom to choose the content of their literary "diet:" they will select the subject matter and/or world view for their supplemental nonfiction reading; their choices will feed their personal desires to learn about, and live vicariously through, the life experiences of others who face the same types of obstacles as they.
