My project will be geared towards our goals of learning about different perspectives and cultural awareness. The Hate U Give tells the story of a young African-American girl, Starr, who struggles with dealing with the loss a friend to police gun violence and maintaining her separate identity at her mostly White private school. Unfortunately, I have students who understand these circumstances all too well. Using a novel like, The Hate U Give, I hope to help give my students from different backgrounds a new perspective on our world and the lives of some of their peers, as well as be able to give much-needed visibility and acceptance to the students who do share Starr's story. Starr's story is a unique and powerful commentary on the current climate in Black culture with the Black Lives Matter movement allowing us to discuss these culturally relevant topics in a safe, academic environment.
