Flexible seating allows the students in my classroom to chose daily a place where they can be most successful in their learning. Each morning they take into consideration who they feel they can work with, how much distraction they can handle and where they will be most comfortable. Currently, during independent and group work, students are able to choose between a tall table with stools, a short table for floor seating and a variety of desks and seats at different levels which allow for single, partner, or group seating. My student's comments in a class survey pointed out that our classroom does not have enough of some the seating which they feel helps them stay more engaged and be less disruptive throughout our day. According to my students, our low table is great to work on, but only for short periods of time because it lacks comfortable seating. Currently, our classroom has one wobble stool which is very popular because it provides much-needed movement for many of the students throughout the day. Another popular choice of seating is our one task chair. This chair is popular because it can be used not only during independent work to provide movement, but can easily also be moved to our whole class instruction area or to group areas. I have seen the huge impact that flexible seating has made for my students and I am hopeful to be able to better serve the needs of my class in the future by providing more of the seating that they say works best for them!
