A huge part of first grade is teaching students how to read. The best way to do this is to provide each child with a variety of books on his/her ability level to practice reading with. My students have thirty minutes of independent reading time each day. During this time, I meet with individual students to provide them with specific goals and strategies to become better readers. The students then go and practice these strategies while reading a book based on their independent reading level. The books that I am asking for, would be a huge asset to our classroom library providing the students with several different books on their reading level to choose from. The students will be more likely to learn to love to read, if they can find books that interest them to practice with. I am confident that with the addition of these books to our classroom library, each student will be able to locate several books of interest to read independently.
