The American kindergarten experience has become much more academic over the past decade at the expense of play. As a mother of young children and a kindergarten teacher, I value the importance of play and its many benefits. Dramatic play and sensory bins are how I plan to bring it back! "Play is the work of children" according to Fred Rogers of Mister Rogers' Neighborhood. Play based learning appeals to children's natural curiosity and is the driving force for their physical, social and emotional development. These little hands need to manipulate, their senses need to be stimulated, and they should be engaging with peers. A play based environment will promote creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity and physical, cognitive and emotional strength. These materials will help me create this environment in my classroom. One goal I have this next year is to have a strong sense of community within my class. Having a schedule of play will support this. I will have a center for dramatic play, a sensory play center among others. The center themes will change biweekly to ensure excitement. Dramatic play center will have environmental print, materials and supplies that allow for the optimal creativity. The sensory play center will be centered around the theme of the month and will include items that will enhance the theme. As an added bonus, sensory centers can also be used to calm students with ADHD, sensory processing disorders and other special needs. I can already anticipate my favorite part of the day which will be circle time to share and celebrate our creative play. By generously donating to our project, I will be able to foster the love of learning through play back to our children one year at a time.
