As a first-year first-grade teacher, I have learned the importance of having a community meeting space where I can come together with my students to share stories, engage in whole-group learning experiences, and build a strong classroom community. As the end of the school year approaches for my first graders, the inevitable has happened: they have gotten bigger, MUCH bigger. As a result, my students have outgrown our classroom carpet. Their growing bodies no longer fit in the squares on the carpet we have now, making our community-meeting space uncomfortable and distracting. As I enter my second year in the classroom (and am predicting a larger class size next fall), I plan to leverage my knowledge of how these almost-second-graders are currently functioning in this space. I hope to provide my new group of first graders with a whole-group meeting space they can grow INTO rather than grow out of. I have chosen this large carpet with 30 squares so each student can have their own space to learn while still coming together as a class to learn in a more comfortable and distraction-free way.
