Over 18 years in my school, I have seen many changes in our curriculum and instruction, in the diversity of school population, and in the sensory needs of the students I teach. Students are coming to school with a variety of sensory needs that a traditional classroom setting cannot address. Many students struggle to sit still at their seat and on our carpet area. They have a need for constant motion or sensory input. The seats and tools that I have requested will provide students the opportunity to move without disrupting the learning of others. Most students are self-aware and can choose an alternative seating option to increase their engagement and participation. These are tools for learning. They are not toys. They are essential for a growing group of students who arrive at school with sensory processing issues. Many of the "negative behaviors" that these students display are actually attempts to SEEK sensory input. When this project is funded, it will provide the tools necessary for these students to succeed in the classroom setting.
