One way I love to engage students in reading is with high interest read alouds! Students get swept away on an adventure when we dive into read alouds that make new places come alive for them. It is my wish to have every student feel that they are represented in the variety of beautifully engaging texts we read in class. In the primary years, it is our job as educators to instill a love of reading in children. This happens when we share the world of books with them. If we want students to engage in literacy we have to give them a reason for why they should. I want to give them texts that represent them. I want them to see themselves in these texts when we read them. When we give children texts that represent their culture or their appearance we give them permission to dream about the wide world that surrounds them and envision the place they have in that world.
