Often times there is very little independent reading that occurs in a high school classroom. Too often students get loaded down with required reading that they forget how much fun reading can be. As a first-year teacher, I am trying to build up my classroom library full of books that I know students will enjoy. I have read every single book that I put on the list and know how impactful the themes can be to teens. I also chose boxed sets because once a student is done with one book they will automatically know the next one they should read. In my classroom, I plan to use these texts for "First Chapter Friday." Every Friday the first thing that we will do is read the first chapter of a book in order to pique interest in the books. The books will not just sit on a shelf in the back of my classroom. They will be integral in the learning that takes place in my classroom.
