My students need help managing their emotions and reactions. They have dealt with things that many people never encounter in their entire lives --and they are just 10 and 11! This can create difficulties for the learning environment, not just for a teacher but for all of the students in the classroom.
By offering these materials (fidget toys, stress balls, puzzle balls, sensory toys) as incentives, I hope to encourage and reward good behavior and self-control. Sometimes students cannot explain what is bothering them, but with the right tools I believe that things could change. These materials will provide students with an outlet for stress, anger, nervousness, etc. while also providing joy due to the toy-like nature.
I have used this method in smaller doses before and it was extremely effective. Students thrive on choice and various sensory experiences. Now, my team teachers and I would like to take this one step further and offer it to all of the fifth graders where we teach as a rewards system.
