With students checking out books weekly, our classroom library gets a lot of use! Although I have spent the last two years building our classroom library, many of the books were donated from retired teachers or bought at second-hand stores, making them older and not as culturally relevant. It is important, now more than ever, to teach our children about diversity and acceptance. Books are an incredible way to reach students and help them understand a perspective, culture, or lifestyle different from their own. Our school is quite diverse, I would love for students to open a book and see themselves and feel represented. These books would be in the hands of students, for read alouds, and shared with other classrooms to help create a welcoming and accepting school environment.
