As a third grade reading teacher, the best approach for me to differentiate reading instruction is to teach in small groups. However, without the proper set up, small group instruction can be ineffective. It is hard to meet with a group of 5 students gathered around a group of desks or sitting on the floor with clip boards and still be accessible to each child. It is also hard for students to stay on task in this arrangement, which makes improving students' reading skills more difficult. Children are more focused when they are in close proximity to the teacher, and when children are focused, they are able to make greater strides in gaining the reading skills in which they are lacking. The benefit of a kidney table is that the teacher is within an arm's reach of each student at all times. Your help will ensure that my students are given every available advantage in gaining the reading skills needed to become successful readers.
