My students are taken out of their regular classrooms and pulled into small groups to learn English as a Second Language. The instruction that I give the students in small group gives them the vocabulary and grammar they need to communicate in their regular classrooms, and on the playground when they are speaking with their friends. Additionally, my students struggle in areas such as math where they do not have the language background to understand concepts such as addition. The MathStart books provide visual content to make sense of these difficult ideas in a comprehensible format. The district is restructuring the classrooms, which means that the small group instruction is now going to take place in a very small room. The room will be too small to house all of the materials the students need. In order to help the students succeed I am requesting totes, vinyl folders, and butcher paper in order to keep their language supplies accessible and easy to transport. Visual literacy and durable materials are critical to students' success as they transition from language classroom support to the general education classroom.
