This year I will be doing several in-depth studies of different time periods and cultures. At the beginning of the year, I will introduce the events that led up to the Holocaust with videos and book excerpts. We will then read, "Number the Stars," as we progress through the fiction unit. After that, the students will do extension studies with "Terezin: Voices from the Holocaust." Lastly, we will study, "I Never Saw Another Butterfly," and complete the Butterfly Project. I have many objectives with this study; one of which is to teach my students the dangers of being silent while liberties are being taken away from others. I also want to teach my students why it is important to practice tolerance, be compassionate, and understand one of the most harrowing acts of genocide in history.
