My classroom currently has 23 students, that number can grow and become less depending on student flow. The class consists of more boys than girls and is a diversified group of kiddos. This is the last year as an elementary student as 5th grade will start their jr high year. Over 3/4ths of the class is from poor incomes and poverty. Our area in general has more of that then other areas in IL. As a teacher and a parent, I want students to be influenced by so many different hands-on activities that will help them as they grow into young adults. Having different STEM activities could have enough impact that some become engineers, decide to work for NASA, become doctors or nurses, and so forth. Research shows that when students can experience things first hand the impact is stronger.
