Little ones are wiggle worms by nature! If you've ever tried to get a five or six year old to sit for more than two minutes you know what I mean! Many kindergartners enter a classroom for the first time in their little lives and don't understand why they have to sit for so long! It's a new environment for them. The structure of a classroom can be overwhelming to some kiddos. Sitting in a desk for any amount of time is not comfortable for anyone, let alone children of this age. When we give kiddos an option of where to sit, who to sit by, how to sit, they now feel they have some control over their environment and comfort. Other kiddos with learning disabilities such as ADHD, can't help their need to move and wiggle even more so than the average kiddo. Flexible seating will provide my students with seating options they need to feel comfortable and unrestricted. Something as simple as being able to choose to sit on a wobble chair versus a stool or sitting on the carpet with a lap desk another day can have a huge positive impact on a child's demeanor. And a positive demeanor means happier kiddos that are more engaged and focused on lessons and learning!
