The Orton-Gillingham philosophy focuses on a multi-sensory approach to reading instruction by incorporating the sense of sight, sound, and touch. Dyslexic students respond better to visual, auditory, and kinesthetic stimulation. Black chalkboards, pictured in my classroom photo, do little for dyslexic students. This project, Reading with Dyslexia, will provide critical tools needed to help my students become multi-sensory readers by making connections and building muscle memory. While the tools will do very little without proper training, my school is paying for training for me at the end of July to become a reading therapist based on the Orton-Gillingham methods. This costly training directly impacts their budgeting efforts to provide the critical infrastructure, such a magnetic white eraser board, needed for my classroom. Funding this project will improve my student outcomes by: (1) improving their decoding strategies; (2) improving their fluency, i.e. rate of words read per minute; and, (3) improving their reading comprehension. In addition, becoming a better reader is a springboard for improving my students' writing skills. Writing is a huge component of the 5th-grade state-mandated tests. Please help my students' level of performance by transforming my mundane black and white classroom into a classroom of bright, vivid colors. Please help learning come alive.
