My students live in central Maine. We are surrounded by forests, foothills, and rivers. It's not uncommon to see deer, raccoons, and the occasional moose! There are lakes surrounding us with loons, ducks, turtles, and a variety of fish. The Maine coast is only a few hours away, and is home to countless species of birds and sea life, including puffins, lobsters, and whales. My students are curious and are driven to learn about the nature that surrounds us. Unfortunately, many informational books aren't easily accessible at an independent level for many students, and we don't have many books covering the subject areas they want to learn more about. Students need access to high interest, non-fiction books at their reading levels. They need to know how informational texts work. Understanding features such as table of contents, headings, captions, diagrams, and glossaries will enable students to summarize facts and use them to create research projects. Your donation to this project will help students connect with non-fiction books on Maine wildlife, and will help them to engage in meaningful research projects. Students will have access to books at their reading level; enabling them to comprehend, analyze, and utilize their new learning while having fun doing it!
