Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Tremain, Billy Colman. White, white, white. My students? 55% not white. So why do we force feed these kids novels with white male protagonists when only 25% of them can identify with those characters? The Help introduces strong, black, female voices into the lives of students, and gives them what feels like a first hand account of the Civil Rights Movement. The Help, coupled with the right accompanying historical text sets, will teach students about the Civil Rights Movement, and what it means to be a better person. The way I look at it: if just one student takes The Help and decides it is their favorite book, or if it propels them to read another book, then this project is well worth it.
