My one-hundred five students in eighth grade are on the lower social-economic scale. Many of my students are bilingual and speak Spanish at home. Many of my diverse students are involved in choir, band, or sports. My students are charismatic, social, and funny in and out of the classroom. However, for some students, school is the only place where they are safe enough to show these characteristics. My students face many challenges in their young lives and oftentimes academics are far from their priorities. Within my science classroom, we focus on creating a community of support where students uplift each other. They are always encouraged to TRY, and are celebrated when they give effort (even if they are wrong).
