Small group instruction is vital in today's classrooms. Our large class sizes make it impossible to meet their individual needs with a one-size-fits-all lesson, not to mention keeping them engaged. As a result, I must group students according to their needs and work with a group of no more than seven students at a time, tailoring my lessons to their literacy needs. How do I keep the other 21 students, who are not working directly with me, in my small group engaged and learning as well? Through the use of fun and skill-driven centers, of course! These center activities that revolve around phonemic awareness, which is a precursor to reading, will engage my students' attention and help them hone in on those important reading foundations while I work with a small group on decoding and important reading behaviors they must be taught so they may master the necessary literacy skills for their future success in life.
