Everyone loves the power of choice. In fact, we all thrive on the choices we make each day. Such a simple concept can have long, lasting effects. This summer, I organized my classroom library by genre, and already students are commenting on how much they love the system and how easy it is to find books. Because of this, I am in a position to add more. I am currently having conferences with my students to learn more about their reading interests, and the book selection on this list will help give them opportunities to read what they really want. I can already see my students cozying up on my sofa or one of my armchairs and settling in with a good read when we have their independent reading time. The gift of the book is not just about words on a page; it is an experience, a social-emotional experience that is far-reaching. Students will remember the experience of holding the book, turning the pages, and how it made them feel. That lasts a lifetime.
