My second graders going on to be third graders next school year will directly benefit from an expansion of our small classroom library that needs to GROW. As a first year teacher I have been able to acquire old books here and there to give them as wide a variety to read as possible. Our class has a WIDE variety of able readers who NEED a range of new books varying in difficulty, as well as genre to ensure we retain their EXCITEMENT about reading! Students need these books available at their fingertips so that nothing stands in their way of picking up a good book and diving straight into it. When students finally pick up a good book at a young age and are excited to read what they WANT to read, it can make the world of a difference in their attitude and enthusiasm about continuing to grow in their development as independent thinkers and readers. As their teacher and biggest advocate I hope to have peace of mind that lack of materials never stands in the way of their excitement about reading.
