In my classroom the carpet area is used as a multi-purpose area. We begin each day and end each day at the carpet. In the morning we spend time greeting one another and each student has the opportunity to share "good news"; which always leads to great conversation opportunities. At various times throughout the day we make our way back to the carpet to have whole group instruction. The carpet area is also a popular area for students to work during station time or small group work. Surrounding our carpet area is our classroom library, so it's not uncommon to see children sprawled out on carpet while reading a book. As our day comes to an end, we meet one last time at the carpet to have a brief recap about our day, and prepare for dismissal. As you can see, our carpet area is a vital area in our classroom. It is the heart of our classroom community. My current area rug is too small for all children to fit on (8x10), has become frayed and the corners no longer lay flat. I'd love an area rug that is big enough for all children to sit comfortably, and better yet, have their own designated area!
