My students are in need of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, Mathematics) materials to expand their experiences and understanding of their world. These items are intended to enhance how children utilize the materials that we already incorporate in to our classroom on a daily basis, while encouraging abstract thinking, prediction, problem solving and observation of cause and effect. “Children must be taught how to think, not what to think.” -- Margret Mead The materials I am requesting will bring STEAM principles into numerous areas of our classroom. The Tabletop Light Panels will allow exploration of color and color mixing in a new way in our art and manipulative areas as well as the examination of x-rays in the science and dramatic play areas. The Fairy Tales Problem Solving Kits will help to stretch stories beyond just a book to figuring out new ideas and solutions for problems from the stories in our block and science area. The Design & Build Engineering Centers will lead children to examine real life design and allow them to experiment and create their own structures with the same elements in the Block and Manipulative areas. The Stand-Up Magnetic Write and Wipe Center when combined with the Crate-A-Path Magnetic Center or Engineer-A-Coaster Activity Kit will give children the opportunity to experiment with pathways and track position through trial and error in a new way and Vertical space.
