My students are in the fourth grade, in a high - poverty public elementary school in the Bay Area of Northern California. 80% of the students in the school receive free or reduced lunch. Within our classroom almost 90% of our students are English Language Learners whose parents speak another language at home. Many experience family problems such as drugs in the household, home foreclosure, parents in jail, depression, physical and emotional abuse.
