I teach writing to fourth graders. For the third unit in our school year, students learn how to write a literary essay. To lead up to this unit, we read Wonder by R.J. Palacio in the first semester. In previous years, they have had to just try to remember the book because I only had a copy for me to read aloud. To feel more confident, write a better essay, and go into more depth with their literary analysis, I would like to have copies of Wonder for each child. Being able to use quotes, re-read text, and search for evidence will develop their analytical skills. In addition, have a text to follow along with while I am reading aloud will help my ESL population develop their language skills.
