Currently our program doesn’t have any sandboxes outside. Sadly, the children use dirt and gravel to build sand castles and cakes. Sand play is an important part of preschool learning. Children gain physical, cognitive, emotional, and social skills while playing in sand. The children become scientists when playing in sand. They explore the texture and components of sand. They learn how to construct with it. It is an open ended material that can provide endless opportunities. Sand play will help children grow in so many ways. Cognition will increase as they learn to measure and pour. Motor skills are enhanced when digging and scooping with their hands and tools. Social skills expand as children work together to make “food”, castles, trenches, roads, etc. Sand play is a natural calming activity and helps children cope with strong emotions. I can’t wait to see my students using the sandboxes!
