The project title points to the idea of creating balance between students and ʻike Hawaiʻi or Hawaiian Knowledge. The materials we are requesting will be used to help students build a papa kuʻi ʻai or poi pounding board when they return to the campus on a new regular schedule. Prior to students creating papa kuʻi ʻai, they will learn the moʻolelo or story of Haloanakalaukapalili, the first kalo plant, and the lesson of caring for the aina or land, so that the aina can provide for us. One learning outcome is that students are able to see the aina through a Hawaiian world view, which means students understand that they each have an inherent responsibility, regardless of where they live on the island, to care for this land. I am hopeful that a change in the world view in each student will be a cause for them to change outwardly. For example, if they were not previously inclined to pickup rubbish off the ground, or even noticing rubbish on the ground, prior to learning about Haloanakalaukapalili, they would remember the story and pickup rubbish without hesitation when they see it. Then in turn students would be afforded the opportunity to share this responsibility with their ohana or family and in turn their ohana share this responsibility with their community.
