This project will be used to increase student engagement in the classroom. Flexible seating supports the idea that all students do not fit the “one size fits all” model of current classroom chairs. Sitting in hard plastic chairs all day creates a very stagnate classroom design and can stifle a child’s ability to be comfortable for various periods of time. As a result, more opportunities for students to be less engaged occur throughout the school day.
While the plastic chairs are a fair choice, flexible seating provides equitable access to instruction because it allows for all students to get what they need in order to be successful. I want to design a room that fosters different modes of learning so that students will stay more engaged throughout the day as they flow from one subject to the next. Some students need more movement than others while others prefer to stand or be on raised, lowers, or bouncy furniture for comfort. In addition, while we currently provide flexible seats for students with disabilities or challenging behavior (1-4 students), allowing all students the opportunity for flexible seating provides a more inclusive environment for all students.
