My students need engaging materials for practicing sight words and phonics during literacy stations. In our sight word station, students will use Wikki Stix, Alphabet Stamps, Alphabet Dough Stampers, the Easy-Punch Alphabet, and Lace-a-Word Beads to create, read, and write sight words. They will practice letter sounds, decoding, and building words in our Word Work station through the use of the Alphabet Mystery Box,Pop and Match Beginning Phonics Games, and Sound Switch Instant Learning Center. These activities will provide my students with a solid understanding of letter sounds and how they can be changed to form a variety of words. By providing my students with activities to practice and become familiar with sight words, we will be making stronger readers, ready to tackle a variety of texts. Sight words account for up to 75% of the words used in beginning children's printed materials. Additionally, 50% of all reading texts are made up of the same 100 words. In Texas, Kindergartners are required to quickly identify 25 or more sight words. Understanding letters and letter sounds are two of the most important predictors of success in learning to read. By manipulating letters and thinking through the sounds they make, students will grow a strong understanding of how letters form the English language. This will provide students with the skills to decode new words as they continue on their reading journeys.
