Black Boys Reads is a group of 4th and 5th grade boys who meets weekly to discuss their school community, home and books that they are reading together. The club allows for a safe space to talk about what it is like to be a black boy in Seattle Public schools and in the world through the lens of books and the characters within them. These boys leave this group with a better sense of self and curiosity about the black male experience. They improve their reading skills as well as foster positive relationships with their teachers, and the African American makes who help facilitate the book club meetings. During this time of distance learning, the materials I am asking for will allow me to continue to keep this incredibly important group of boys engaged with their community and their learning. Each boy will receive a personalized tote bag with their book club reading materials, a notebook, pencils and water bottle.
