I'll read emergent books, favorite picture books, to my students several times so that students can then "read" these books to themselves. Through listening to these stories, students will learn concepts about print, develop phonemic awareness and rhyme. These engaging, predictable stories help young learners to feel like they are already readers! These felt sets will enable my students to retell these emergent stories independently, increasing their comprehension and understanding of how words and books work. Part of becoming a good reader is the ability to take and understand the characters' perspectives. Students will enjoy acting as their favorite story characters as they "read" to each other. Students will develop an understanding of character, setting, problem, solution and plot- the essential parts of every good story. These sets will be especially helpful for students to develop strong oral storytelling skills as they are beginning to develop as readers and writers of print.
