My students are a diverse and energetic group that are growing up under very difficult circumstances. Most live in poverty in an urban setting and many come from broken homes. Music provides a creative and positive outlet for these children and they truly need music as a way of experiencing a sense of achievement and growth in their lives. The middle school my students attend is very old (built in 1923) and has virtually no budget to support a music program. The current budget crisis has added to the difficulty of supporting and maintaining a music program and donations from parents/guardians are virtually non-existent. My students thrive on the creative opportunities that music provides and they are very excited whenever they have the possibility of performing, even at a simple school assembly. These kids need music in their lives and I want to continue providing hope and inspiration for them.
