With these materials my class will build various types of catapults to simulate siege equipment building during the Medieval period. Students will work in groups to design, sketch and build their catapults with the hope of knocking down a student designed and built wall to represent a fortified city. We will build our wall with a combination of building blocks, paper cups, glue and wooden dowels. Our catapults will be made out of a combination of Popsicle sticks, rubber bands, wooden dowels, and wooden spools. With these objects, we will explore life and military strategy in the Medieval period in a way that will give students a hands-on learning experience and an ability to show their thinking process in a tangible way that leaves them with an enduring understanding of warfare during our period of study.
