9th grade marks many students' first impression of William Shakespeare and his timeless influence on Western literature. Unfortunately, by 11th and 12th grades, I hear, "I hate Shakespeare!" as students decry the disconnect between his language and ours as well as the length of time Shakespeare units have taken in the past. It's time to give Shakespeare the first impression he deserves and students' the engagement they deserve as they access the Bard's most famous play: Romeo and Juliet. Brain research supports that graphic novels--novels with both visuals and text--engage multiple parts of the brain and add depth of analysis to reading that text cannot offer alone. What better way to engage students than to offer a graphic novel study of Romeo and Juliet? That way, students can engage with the play visually--the next best thing to experiencing a performance firsthand--as well as learn to read with an analytical eye that graphic novels provide. This unit will include the background of Shakespeare's theater and time period before the graphic novel study. Students will study the conventions of graphic novels so that they can better analyze the nuances of storytelling and the relationships between text and visuals. Those students who are English Language Learners will access these graphic novels with the visuals necessary for understanding the text anyway, let alone understanding the text as originally written. Overall, the unit shall set students up for a positive relationship with the Bard rather than a strained and frustrated one.
