Five Reasons Why We Need Ukuleles For Our Fifth Grade Music Curriculum Every place is a happy place when you play the ukulele. 1. Ukuleles are a growing trend in music education. Thanks to rising stars like Grace VanderWaal from America’s Got Talent, playing the ukulele has become quiet trendy. Although we don’t need to encourage students to follow trends, it can be a motivator for elementary aged students. 2. The ukulele is portable and easy to store. Apologies to Tuba players out there, but transporting and storing large instruments is nearly impossible at an elementary school level. The ukulele can easily be taken in a car and stored in the classroom as necessary. 3. It’s a solo and ensemble instrument! One of the traditional standards in music education is to get students performing alone and with others. Ukulele is fun to play by yourself and with others. Students can make amazing music on their own at home, but we can also play together as a class and as a whole grade. 4. You can sing and play at the same time! Being able to accompany yourself is a special joy in music as it makes kids feel like a rock star. There is something fun about providing your own accompaniment. Fifth graders are sometimes “too cool” for singing but with a ukulele they feel more confident in their ability to sing. 5. The ukulele is relatively easy to play. Although I know for some students learning to play the ukulele will be difficult, music teachers have shared that most everyone that tries has some measure of success. Even if they only learn a few chords and strumming patterns, they are able to be part of something great.
