Rhythm Path’s “Day of Drumming” program is an all day event for the entire school. Each student will have their own authentic West African djembe drum to play while learning traditional rhythms and songs. The Day of Drumming will teach students cross-cultural skills, expression, creative skills, and encourages important skills in teamwork, self-expression and communication. Drum circles lay a foundation of understanding the significance of rhythm in all music and help students incorporate them into a basic, traditional rhythm. Group drumming also establishes a comfortable setting that minimizes feelings of self-consciousness, or anxiety when performing. Most importantly, drum circles transcend differences in age, culture, and talent when everyone works together to make music. Students will learn about the music and culture of West Africa while participating in an interactive drum circle. We will sing traditional songs while teaching rhythm skills and even try some improvisation! Students will cover the following National Music Standards while participating in the drumming circle: Standard #2. Performing on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music. Standard #3. Improvising melodies, variations, and accompaniments. Standard #4. Composing and arranging music within specified guidelines. Standard #6. Listening to, analyzing, and describing music. Standard #7. Evaluating music and music performances. Standard #9. Understanding music in relation to history and culture.
