I use flexible seating in my classroom both to provide students with choice and to support their sensory, physical and emotional needs. Currently I have in place: bean bag chairs, ball seats, beach chairs, camping chairs, stools and one under the desk foot pedal desk cycle. Many of my students struggle to sit still and thus maintaining attention on task or task completion can be difficult tasks for them. At the end of last school year after digging into research on the impact movement has on attention, I tested out a foot pedal desk cycle in my learning center classroom. Using the foot pedal desk cycle, I saw students who struggled to maintain attention on and complete a task working productively for 40 minutes straight nonstop. I then rotated the foot pedal desk cycle between different academic classrooms. Both my students and classroom teachers reported back to me that levels of attention and productivity increased. I knew I was onto something! Given the success I saw with the foot pedal desk, I want to see what impact a exercise bike desk will have on my students with regards to their physical activity, ability to attend and complete tasks. My hope is to be able to acquire one exercise bike desk for my learning center to use with my students during their pullout services. By donating to our project, you will help my students to improve their physical fitness, improve and increase their attention which in turn will increase their work completion. With increased work completion students will be able to increase their academic achievement levels. Imagine the impact an exercise bike could have on the academic achievement gap while simultaneously encouraging healthy exercising habits.
