Our school wide focus is to improve writing and increase writing scores. Knowing that foundations for good writers begins in first grade I was very much on board to pilot the Lucy Calkin's Writing Program. This program is fantastic and has enabled my students to see themselves as real writers. It is so exciting to see first graders become real writers who love to write. In first grade students learn to write lively personal narratives that focus on a small moment of their lives, real teaching stories where they teach classmates about what they are experts on as well as opinion writing. Students work with writing partners to plan and improve their work. I am hoping to get funding for writing journals. This past year I purchased primary writing journals that gave students space to sketch, plan and add details to their stories The developmentally appropriate lined pages were perfect for keeping writing legible and practicing proper letter formation. My students' writing improved significantly using these journals. A designated area on each page to draw and plan helped improved content. Each student's writing was kept together in one spot and did not get lost. Students could also always look back in their books and see the amazing progress they were making throughout the year.
