The importance of learning the power of self-regulation, self-awareness, and empathy cannot be overstated. My students love to listen to picture books read aloud, discuss the characters, emotions and actions, connect it to their own experiences, and role play the scenarios we read about. Every day we practice these routines, I see my students grow into wonderfully kind, strong and confident individuals. We are in need of picture books that will reflect the students’ various cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds, in addition to their wide range of abilities. They are much more engaged when they can see themselves represented in the characters, such as books with kids who are in wheelchairs, ones who wear glasses, ones who have strong sensory preferences like quiet environments. We value our classroom time spent learning about self-regulation, calming strategies, and social skills as we have seen that students are more available to learn and retain information when they are able to regulate their emotions and behaviors. These social skills are a big predictor of future success in life. Please help me stock the classroom library with these wonderful picture books!
